A wardrobe overflowing with clothes and accessories yet the imminent question “What should I wear?” is commonly asked when standing in front of the mirror with a rising bundle of tossed clothes at the back. Perhaps the problem originates from within the question, instead. “What Should I pair?” is the pivotal question when it comes to style. You can wear multiple styles and color combinations even with what you already own.  Pairing the right colors is a matter of following a few simple rules or guidelines. And voila! You will look like a confident fashion expert when you walk out of the door.

The Bold and Bright!

Who doesn’t love bright colors! It lifts up the mood and makes you feel energetic. It can portray the identity that you want to initiate and it can communicate your personality as you present yourself. Vivid colors like yellows, reds and oranges are best paired with neutrals (black, white, grey, cream or brown) it not only helps to make the color stand out but it would also make you look chic and elegant. Give the neutral look a fun perky twist by pairing bright accessories like a pair of red pumps or an electric blue bag.

Today, Black is the go-to color for most women, when it comes to parties, wedding receptions or even a date night. Refresh your wardrobe by adding vibrant colors. If you want to stand out in a bright combination then try pink and red or purple and blue.  Bright colors are most suitable to fun and eventful occasions, so keep colors minimal for work attire.

Working Woman

Life tends to be a mundane and monotonous routine for working women, especially when you have to wear the same conservative neutral shades to work every day. We crave to live as the individuals we are and in fact, your personality and style can be merged into your work attire harmoniously. Clothes can make a difference, so incorporate colors into your wardrobe to add a fun personal touch; mint, citrus and pastel shades are popular today, opt for a mint top paired with neutral pants or a skirt. Mix prints with solid neutrals or bright pants with neutral tops for an exciting yet professional look.  Accessorizing with jewelry, shoes or your handbag with bright colors is another fail-proof way to style your work attire with colors.

Second Skin

Where are your pants! Wearing leggings in the exact tone as your skin can put you in an embarrassing situation. We know that you love wearing leggings but avoid the common mistake of wearing it in the exact tone as your skin. Instead, look elegant and modern in a pair of slim pants or leggings that is a tone either three to two shades lighter or darker than your skin color.

It slips our conscious thought that most of the time we buy a top or dress simply because it looks pretty. Pause for a minute to think if it would look good on you, or if it flatters your skin. Most Maldivian women have a medium skin tone, for which metallics, dove grey, pastel yellow, peach and blue will work gracefully. And if you have a darker skin then bright colors do stand out, but wear them wisely. Reds and blues work well as accents to an outfit. For more formal occasions you can also wear black and grey tones.

Rule of 3

The ‘three color rule’ is popular with women around the globe. Quite simply, there should not be more than three colors in your outfit. This rule is especially applicable for women who wear the burkha. Avoid wearing too many prints and colors. Try to have one neutral shade (since it compliments most colors) in your ensemble.  If you are wearing a printed top then your burkha must be in a color taken from the prints and keep your pants or skirt in a solid color. Accessories and jewelry can be used to balance color as well. For example, a statement silver necklace can be balanced with a pair of silver pumps to give an edgy cool look.
