Fitness and Weight Loss for New Moms

Reaching our pre-pregnancy weight is not simple, YET achievable!

Pregnancy is such a beautiful thing which changes our lives forever. Staying fit during and after pregnancy is essential for our health, nevertheless after giving birth often times we get too occupied with our ‘bundles of joy’, we set aside our own priorities. Bouncing back after the baby can be hard work for new moms, even for celebrities who often amaze us with their speedy return to their pre-pregnancy bodies.

Our bodies need time to recover from having to go through the tremendous yet wonderful transformation after giving birth especially if we have had a C-Section. Every so often with a new baby in the house and being undoubtedly fatigued, we end up eating junk foods such as burgers, fries, submarines and foods containing a lot of carbohydrates. However, during this time it is very important to rest well and eat healthily with a colorful mixture of all the fruits and veggies and a steady supply of vitamins to speed up the recovery. We can prepare easy-to-grab snacks like homemade protein bars and pre-packed sliced veggies and keep them refrigerated.

Even with all the new excitement in our lives, it is important to find time just to pamper ourselves. This can be in the form of a good workout or a visit to the nearest salon. Making fitness a priority helps us to shed the ‘baby fat’ and get back in to shape promptly. For those moms who find it impossible to leave the little one even for a while, can either grab a yoga mat or exercise shoes and workout with the help of a good exercise home video or design their own workouts, in the comfort of their home. It is even simple as skipping a rope or a few minutes every day. Like they say ‘if there’s a will, there’s a way’!

Getting our old body back is hard work, especially for the moms who had gained a lot of weight during pregnancy, yet it is not impossible. Being fit makes us more confident with ourselves. A fitness instructor once told me that after childbirth the body goes back to being tender and vulnerable, like that of the baby we have just had, which makes it the perfect ground to shape it up in any way we like. She also added that we should love our bodies and not starve ourselves.

The formulation of a perfect diet (a bit of a small portion of cheat-treat every now and then is forgivable) and a strict scheduled exercise plan at least 3 times a week, to burn the excess calories can be exciting. It is also important for our self-esteem to celebrate our victories, no matter how small it is. It makes us feel more positive and happy after a workout and usually reminds us to make smarter nutritional choices. Though the workouts might not start out as powerful as they were pre-pregnancy, it will gradually get back to that point.

Above all, what we should remember is before starting any form of exercise after childbirth, it is important to consult our gynecologist and get a good to go confirmation. After all, it is always better being safe than sorry. It is also a fact that we can only start exercising once we are physically and mentally ready.

So Ladies! Get a grip and take that essential step to rejuvenate your lives!
